Abstract

The study of relationship between water movement and suspended sediment dynamic had been conducted at eleven stations in Ambong Bay. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of water movement velocity and direction toward the distribution of total suspended sediment (TSS). Samplings were carried out three times which is 18 August 2009, 19 October 2009 and 2 December 2009 during Southwest, Inter-seasonal and Northeast monsoon respectively. Water samples were taken using water sampler whereas the velocity and direction of water movement was measured using current meter. Data of water movement and TSS were analyzed by using SPSS statistical analysis whereas the patterns of TSS and water movement distribution were analyzed using Surfer version 8 software. The findings of the research showed that most of the suspended sediment distributed at the mouth of the bay where highest current velocities were observed. The average current velocity for each station in 18 August, 19 October and 2 December were 0.54 ms¹ 0.53 ms-1 and 0.55 ms¹ respectively. The average weights for the suspended sediment were 0.028 gL¹, 0.003 gL¹ and 0.033 gL¹ whereas the average current directions were 242.7º, 205.2º and 232.5º respectively. Statistical analysis showed that there were positive correlation between the direction and velocity of the current with the distribution of the TSS. The concentration and distribution of TSS at the study area also affected by other factors such as Wind, waves and human activities.
