Abstract

The survival and growth rate of river catfish, Pangasius hypophthalmus larvae is reported higher in completely dark condition than light condition. Thus, further experiment was conducted to examine the river catfish larval swimming and feeding behaviors under different light intensities which were 0, 0.1, 1, 10 and 100 lux. The criteria that had been examined were larval swimming activity, swimming speed, biting activity and feeding behavior under different light intensities. The results showed that river catfish larvae in dim light condition especially 0 and 0.1 lux had higher swimming activity, swimming speed and Ingestion rate of Artemia but lowest biting activity. On the other hand, larvae In dim light condition swum at the entire of the water bodies if compared with the larvae In light condition where they swum and rest at the bottom of container at most of the time. So, the behaviors shown by river catfish larvae In dim light condition had reduced the frequency of biting activity but Improving the ingestion rate of Artemia. Yet, the reducing of biting activity may reduce the cannibalism and improving survival rate. Then, river catfish can be cultured In dim light condition in order to achieve higher survival and growth rate.
