Abstract

African catfish, Clarias gariepinus is an important fish species that contribute toward freshwater aquaculture industry due to their attribute of omnivorous feeding habits, high growth rate and strong against disease. However, larvae of African catfish are reared different tank colours and this research was done to identify the optimum tank colour for African catfish larvae rearing. Newly hatched was reared in six different tank colours, which were black, blue, green, gray, white, and transparent for 15 days. Blue tank shows the highest survival rate, growth in term of total length, and body weight gain with 89.3±1.8% (mean±SD, N=15), 212.0±20.1%, and 599.5±37.9% (N=15) respectively. However, dark coloured tanks, which are black, green, and gray, had no significant different (P>0.05) with blue coloured tank. The results may be due to reduction of light penetration hence provide a more comfortable environment for the African catfish larvae and caused less stress. Less stress allow African catfish larvae to perform better survival rate, growth in term of total length, and body weight gain. Through this research, dark coloured tanks are recommended for African catfish larvae rearing.
