Abstract

This study was held to determine the infection of parasites in freshwater fishes in Kulamba, Sabah. About 33 fishes from four species were collected from the ponds located in Kulamba by using fish net. The fish species collected consists of Anabas testudineus, Channa striatus, Clarias teysmanni, and Trichogaster trichopterus. There were five species of Nematodes and one species of Acanthocephalan found in the infected fishes. The parasites were collected and preserved in 70% alcohol. Identification was carried out by observed their morphology under the light microscope. Four species of Nematodes and Acanthocephalan were identified to the Genus level. However, one species of nematodes was unidentified. Parasite species were identified as Capillaria sp., Hysterolacium sp., Contracaecum sp., Strongyloides sp., while Acanthocephalan was identified as Pallisentis sp. There were nine fishes or 27% were infected. Its indicated that prevalence of infection was relatively low in Kulamba. Channa striatus documented as the highest percentage of fish infected (18%) among the four species of fish. There was no infection of paraSites found in Trichogaster trichopterus. Out of nine infected fishes, 148 parasites were found. The most abundance of parasites was represented by Capillaria sp. which infected in 66.67% of infected fishes. Furthermore, single infection were occurs mainly in Anabas testudineus (50%), while double infections and multiple infections were only occurred in Channa striatus. The correlation test showed that the number of parasites increased as the fish's length or weight increased. Moreover, the number of parasite for each species was correlated with the length and weight of fish. Furthermore, Mann-Whitney test showed that there were no differences in the length and weight of fish between the infected fish and noninfected fish, while the Kruskal-Wallis test showed that there were no differences in the number of parasites among fish species.
