Abstract

African catfish, Clarias gariepinus have become popular in the freshwater aquaculture industry due to its attribute advantages: high growth rate, strong resistance to disease, great tolerance to temperature and salinity, thrive well at low dissolved oxygen and omnivorous feeding habits. Even though the seeds production could be produced through artificial propagation, but major constrain in the mass production has persistently remained due to low fertilization, hatching and larval survival rates. One major problem which inhibits mass production is the eggs adhesiveness of the fish. The present study was conducted to elucidate a quick, cheap and user-friendly method to eliminate eggs adhesiveness with the objective of improving the mass production. Five treatments using four different medium (mud, beach sand, flour, powder) and a control (without any medium) were used to eliminate egg adhesiveness of African catfish. The control showed mean fertilization and hatching rates at 98.75%±1.61 and 35.76%±10.86, respectively. The best treatment was found with mud as a medium, which yield a mean fertilization rate of 99.26%±1.28 and mean hatching rate at 56.74%±9.39. The study concludes that mud is the most suitable medium to eliminate egg adhesiveness in C. gariepinus.
