Abstract

The indigenous chicken is the local chicken breed that are raised in free-range system in the rural area. Animal genetics experts had express their thoughts that these indigenous chickens are best to be conserved for future use in the industry. However, there is a lack of information on the true genetic potential, as well as the productive and reproductive performances of these chickens. The objective of this study is to determine and evaluate the productive and reproductive parameters of indigenous chicken in Sandakan Sabah, Malaysia. Data collection sheets were prepared to collect the information on the productive parameters of the indigenous chicken and the farmer's background. Indigenous chicken were selected randomly from the villages to collect data for egg parameters such as the total chick hatched per set, egg colour, weight and shape. A set of 70 eggs were collected randomly and brought to the FSA Poultry Science Laboratory. 20 eggs were broken for the external and internal egg quality evaluation. 50 eggs were placed in the incubator for incubation period of 21 days with the temperature between 37.2 to 38.8°C, and 50 to 65% of relative humidity. Initial weight of each day old chick (DOC) and the mortality rate were also recorded. From the results, most of the chicken were left under a backyard production and raised traditionally in a free range system although cages and barns were provided. The indigenous chickens do not lay eggs in the barns or nest boxes provided. It laid eggs on any available spot on the yard. The indigenous chicken eggs has whitish shell colour and smaller size, with long or oval shaped eggs. The average egg weight was 44.06 g (±1.11), average yolk weight of 12.85 g (±0.57), average albumin weight of 21.61 g (±0.504) and average shell thickness of 0.17 g (±0.06) with the weight of 4.59 g (±0.12). The fertility rate of the eggs was 84% and the hatchability rate was 52.38%. This were probably caused by many factors such as the genetic factors, vitamin deficiency or diseases infections during the incubation period. The average body weight of DOC is 27.36 g but increased to 172.05 g after s weeks. The total feed intake (g/day/birds) was 6.33 g for 1st week and increased to 29.31 g in 5th week. The FCR recorded was 2.84 which can be considered as high, and the total performance index (PI) for the 5 weeks was 2.33. During the rearing period, the chicken has low growth rate and high mortality rate up to 31.8%. As conclusion, there are no significant difference in between the productive and reproductive parameters of female indigenous chicken as the results collected were still within the range of results from previous research.
