Abstract

The objectives of the study were to evaluate the effectiveness of listerine mouthwash as a potential floral preservative solution, study the effect of storage temperature with the preservative solution to extend the vase life of cut rose flowers and to determine the number of bacteria in vase solution. The experimental design was CRD using pipe water as control, 1 %, 0.8%, 0.4%, and 0.2% of listerine mouthwash. Each treatment replicated three times and was stored at two different temperatures (10:1:1 0c) and (25:1:5 ̊C). The vase life and water loss data were observed and collected daily. All results were analyzed using SPSS software (Two-way ANOVA). The results showed that Listerine mouthwash solution was significantly affect the vase life of cut rose flowers (p≤0.05). Cut rose flowers treated with 0.4% of listerine mouthwash solution is the best treatment which has 41.3 days stored at cold room temperature (10:1:1 ̊C). Based on the ANOVA results, storage at lower temperature (10:1:1 ̊C) is suitable for cut flowers to prolong the vase life compare to higher storage temperature (25:1:5 ̊C). The bacteria colony number lower in treatments with higher concentration of listerine mouthwash, Treatment 5 with pipe water only has the higher number of bacteria colony compared to those treated with Listerine mouthwash in both storage temperatures. The storage temperature that favors the bacteria growth in the vase solution is 25 to 30°C.
