Abstract

The objective of this research is to build a capacitance soil moisture sensor which will determine the moisture content in soil. A power supply, 510Ω resistor and a soil probe is needed to build this sensor. The soil probe is made using two sewing needle which connected in parallel and act as a capacitor. Soil moisture can be determined if the capacitance of the soil is known. Then, dielectric constant of that soil will be calculated using a certain formula and finally the moisture content is determined. Soil moisture is measured by referring the value of dielectric constant of water which is theoretically 80 and the value of dielectric constant of air which is 1. In this research, a few soil samples is collected from different area and tested in the lab using this sensor to find the moisture content of each types of soil. As a conclusion, this sensor can determined soil moisture content by knowing the value of capacitance in each soil. Increasing moisture present in soil will increase the value of capacitance. This sensor can be used for agriculture applications because soil moisture content is very important for plant growth. Besides, this sensor is easy to use and the cost to build this sensor is very cheap.
