Abstract

This study is mainly focused to determine the composition of orthophosphates and oil & grease in drainage water around Kota Kinabalu city centre area. It is also concerned with determining the spatial distribution of both parameters in the study area and whether the oil & grease discharges comply with the national eflluent discharges standard. This research involves both field measurement and laboratory analysis. Physical parameters which are pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), conductivity and temperature were measured directly in the field. The chemical parameters are analysed at the lab using Ascorbic Acid Method for orthophosphates determination, whilst oil & grease was determined using gravimetric method. Seven drains located at Api-Api, Public Fresh Market, Gaya Streets, City Park, Kg. Air and Asia City were chosen as sampling points. Samplings were done twice on two different days for each location. From this study, it was found that the concentration of orthophosphates ranges from 0.3 mgl¹ to 3.2 mg¹. Meanwhile oil & grease contents vary between 30 mgl¹ to 123 mgl¹ Both parameters were not equally distributed around Kota Kinabalu city centre area whereby results varied according to location of drains and activities carried out in the particular area. Public Fresh Market and Api-Api area have higher content of orthophosphates and oil & grease. Gaya Streets has the lowest content of both parameters. The discharges of oil & grease in all location exceeded eflluent standard (Standard A, B) of the Environmental Quality (Sewage & Industrial Effluents) Regulations 1979.
