Abstract

The neutralization of acid mine drainage (AMD) using calcareous sandstone (CSS) aggregates have been investigated in the laboratory through batch experiments. Three AMD samples, namely AMD1, AMD2 and AMD3 collected from Mamut Copper Mine (MCM), Ranau were used in this study. The pH and total acidity of the AMD samples were in the range of 2.84-3.06 and 370 -1386 mg CaCO³/L, respectively. The experimental results showed that the pH of the AMD samples exhibited an overall increase upon mixing with CSS aggregates. Except for AMD1, the other AMD samples (i.e AMD2 & AMD3) showed a strong pH buffering at pH 〜4.0 during the first 60 minutes contact time. In the case of AMD1, the pH showed a gradual increase with contact time. Depending on the type of AMD and number of CSS aggregates, the final pH attained after 4 hours contact time ranged from 4.5-7.2. The higher the number of aggregates the higher was the final pH, while the final pH attained for AMD1>AMD2>AMD3. The resistance of the AMD to pH changes is in agreement with the titration data and dependent on the total acidity. Comparatively, the final pH attained for AR-CaCO₃₋AMD mixtures was higher while the increase was faster, irrespective of type of AMD. Repeated exposures of CSS aggregate on AMD resulted in final pH in the range 2.84-4.90 (i.e <5.0). Overall, the effectiveness of CSS aggregate as a neutralizing material for AMD, among others, is dependent on characteristics of the AMD.
