This study was conducted in order to evaluate the effect of higher than 1:1 soil to Mushroom medium residue (MMR) ratio on Zoysia matrella growth and to examine the effect of MMR addition on soil physical and chemical characteristics of media on open field. Zoysia matrella were grown in three types of media containing soil and MMR, which were mixed at 1:1 (control), 1:1.5 and 1:2 (kg/kg) ratios. The experiment was arranged in a completely-randomized design with five replicates per media under open field condition and fertilizer was not applied. Media physical, chemical and turfgrass functional qualities were determined at the first and final week of the experiment while turfgrass growth and visual qualities were counted in weekly basic within a span of four months, analysed, and compared. The analysis indicated that the addition of MMR beyond 1:1 ratio did not improve the soil physical, chemical and, turfgrass growth, visual and functional qualities significantly. For soil physical and chemical characteristics, Media 1:1 had the highest moisture content, organic matter content and organic carbon content which were 3.76%, 5.8% and 4.19% respectively. For turfgrass growth responses, Media 1:2 had the highest shoot density which was 2501 tillers per m², and also the highest stolon growth which was 2.0 cm. For turfgrass visual quality, the Media 1:1.5 had the highest hue value which was 220.1°. For turfgras functional quality, Media 1:1 had the highest relative water content which was 92.77%. However, the MMR addition beyond 1:1 did not improve media fertility as the age of MMR is main factor, which the composting process of MMR dictated the effectiveness of organic materials to media quality. The turfgrass qualities can be monitored by constant field maintenance and clear management objectives. Leaf texture and leaf colors remain irresponsive to MMR addition because its' are predetermined genetically. Regarding the most suitable MMR-based media, 1:1 ratio would be the most suitable however its effects is temporary therefore regular top up is required. The MMR addition would serves as solution to mitigate dependency on fertilizers and pollution problems in turfgrass planting.
