The glycaemic index (GI) of breakfasts commonly consumed in Malaysia was investigated among healthy subjects. Ten subjects (9 females, 1 male; BMI 21.87±2.19 kg/m²) consumed sOg of available carbohydrate portions of reference food (glucose) and three test meals (fried rice, fried noodles and roti canal) after an overnight fast. capillary blood samples were taken at time 0 (fasting), IS, 50, 45, 60, 90 and 120 min from the start of consumption. Incremental areas under the curve (AUC) were calculated for each subject. The mean GI value of each meal was calculated for the entire group of subjects. AUC of fried noodles, 128.30±20.21 mmol 'min/L, and roti canai, 109.20±12.86 mmol 'min/ l , were significantly different from AUC of gluoose, 163.10± lS.20 mmol'min/L (p<0.0S). Between meals, AUC of fried rice (85.47±10.60 mmol'min/L) was significantly different from fried noodles (p<0.05). The GI values of fried rice, fried noodles and roti canai were 71.B4±6.14 (high GI), 5S.70±B.1B (medium GI) and 62.S9±2.91 (medium GI) respectively. No significant difference was found among the GI values. Fat and protein content were not associated with the GI values. GI values of mixed meals can serve as guidance for healthy meal selection.
