Abstract

A rod-shaped monomer containing azobenzene based mesogen moieties with allyl as terminal group was synthesized. Ethyl 4-(4-allytoxylphenylazo)benzoate was synthesized from Ethyl 4-(4-hydroxyphenyl(azo)benzoate) using Williamson ether synthesis by allyl bromide. It is polymerized using AlBIN as Initiator, leads to formation of a final compound, which was Poly[Ethyl 4-(4-allytoxylphenylazo)benzoate]. Fourier-Transform-IR (FT-IR) was used to Identify the molecular structure of the compounds. FT-IR spectrums show the presence of aliphatic alkyl chains, azobenzene moieties, and carboxyl group In the final compound. UV spectromebic analysis shows the presence of azo linkage In PoIy[Ethyl 4-(4-allytoxylphenylazo)benzoate]. The phase transition temperatures and enthalpies were evaluated by thermal analysis of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). From the thermogram, it shows endothermic peak at 124.44 °C and exothermic peak at 115.76°C.
