Abstract

In the present study, spent tea leaves (5n) and tea extract wastes (TEW) were used as adsorbents for amaranth red dye adsorption in batch process. Batch mode experiments were conducted at room temperature to study the effects of pH, dosage, contact time and initial concentration of amaranth red on the nature of adsorption. Equilibrium sorption isotherms and sorption kinetics were investigated. The experimental data were analyzed using the langmuir and Freundlich Isotherm. The experimental data using spent tea leaves (5n) were fitted well to Langmuir Isotherm and the monolayer adsorption capacity was found to be 19.08 mQ/g while for tea extract waste (TEW) the data were fitted well to the Freundlich isotherm and the qmax obtained was 15.08 mg/g. The kinetic data obtained at different contact time were analyzed using the pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order equation. Both experimental data for spent tea leaves (5n) and tea extract waste (TEW) fitted very well the pseudo-second order kinetic model. Both spent tea leaves and tea extract waste have the potential to be used as low cost adsorbent for the removal of amaranth red dye from aqueous solution.
