Abstract

Order Tetraodontiformes (pufferfish and filefishes) comprises of 9 families, 101 genera and 357 species according Nelson, (2006). Several species of this order of fishes had been exploited as food fish during the preliminary study during July, 2010. Sampling had done from August to November 2010 around Sabah. Fish market sampling is the main sampling method. Any species from Order Tetraodontifonnes are collected as specimens. Continuous sampling is needed to observe biodiversity trend of this fish Order. However, fishing gears are used for sampling at the sea. Gill net 1.5 inches and 2 inches mesh size together with cab pot are used for sampling. This study provides the basic distribution and habitats for the fishes within this Order In Sabah waters. Status of exploitation is provided as well in this study. However, no landing data from Fisheries Department Sabah or literatures such as Marine Food Ashes and Fisheries of Sabah show the exploitation of fishes within Order Tetraodontifonnes. In order to fill up the gap, biodiveristy database is Important to access the current status of Order Tetraodontiformes. Morphological data of this order is provided to Improve the knowledge of the fishes within this Order. This study found 46 species from 6 families of this Order. There are 12 species from family Monacanthidae; 11 species from Family Tetraodontidae; 12 species from family Balistidae; 6 species in Family Diodontidae; 4 species In Family Ostradidae and 2 species in Family Triacanthidae. Out of 46 species, 15 species are exploited as food fish. Morphological data for Arothron manilensis and Chelonodon patoca are match with previous study. Morphological data for Lagocephalus gloveri and Lagocephalus spadiceus are the first comprehensive data that provided so far.
