Abstract

This research was carried out to study the diversity of earthworm species in Gaya Island of Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, Sabah and to study the effect of abiotic factors (soil moisture, pH, depth of leaf litter and area of canopy cover) around island towards the abundance of earthworm. The sampling was carried out from January 3014 to March 2014. A standardized plot (10mx10m) was used for earthworm sampling. Four plots were located at four different trails within Gaya Island. A total of eight species from four genera were collected in this study. The four genera belong to the family Lumbricidae. Shannon-Weiner Diversity Index showed high earthworm diversity at Gaya Island (H'=1.442). Species Lumbricus sp. 1 and Eisenia sp. 2 were found abundant at Gaya Island with 18 hits for each species. Some species such as Lumbricus sp. 2 and Lumbricus sp. 3 were only recorded once throughout the sampling. Two individuals found could not be identified as they lack physical features needed for identification purpose and labeled as Species 1. As of the effect of abiotic factors, only soil moisture (r=0.0458) and area of canopy cover (r=0.414) showed significant positive linear correlation with the worm abundance. On the other hand, pH (r=-0.731) and depth of leaf litter (r=-0.557) did not give significant relationship with earthworm's diversity. The diversity and abundance of earthworm in Gaya Island have shown the potential for earthworm conservation which are important to human as earthworm has crucial role in maintaining a good green ecosystem.
