Abstract

Morphological characteristic is the first step in the classification and evaluation of germplasm. An observation was conducted to determine the diversity level of the rice landraces collected from Tuaran, Sabah. There were 13 seed morphological characters had been observed were awning, awn colour, apiculus colour, lemma and palea colour, lemma and palea pubescence, sterile lemma colour, sterile lemma length, 100-grain weight, length, shape, seed coat colour, endosperm type and scent. The evaluation of seed morphological characters was referred to IBPGR-IRRI Rice Advisory Committee's guideline. Diversity index of the each seed morphological character was calculated and analysed using Shannon-Weaver diversity Index with the help of Microsoft Excel. The diversity index, H' of awning, awn colour, apiculus colour, lemma and palea colour, lemma and palea pubescence, sterile lemma colour, sterile length, seed coat colour, grain length, grain shape, endosperm type and scent was 0.4025, 0.5483, 0.5408, 0.6589, 0.4494, 0.8127, 0.4239, 0.2788, 0.1143, 0.3981, 0.5541 and 0.5937, respectively. The highest diversity index was found in sterile lemma colour (H’0.8127) whereas the lowest diversity index was found in grain shape (H’0.1143). The overall diversity index, H' of the seed characteristics of Tuaran rice landraces was 0.8116. This indicated that the Tuaran rice landraces had high variations in seed morphology characteristics. The overall diversity index, H of Tuaran rice landraces ranged from 0.0000-0.2441. The Sipitang / Sepuluh had higher diversity index.
