Abstract

The potential of rain tree leaf as adsorbent was investigated. The adsorption potential of rain tree leaf in adsorbing copper is affected by the particle size, contact time and initial pH. Characterisation of the rain tree leaf showed the involvement of functional groups, surface area and binding sites on the performance of rain tree leaf. Langmuir model with R2 value of 0.9967 described the copper adsorption onto rain tree leaf better compared to the Freundlich model with R2 value of 0.9208. The monolayer adsorption capacity was 8.25 mg/g. The adsorption kinetic of the copper adsorption onto rain tree leaf is better described by the pseudo-second-order model with R2 value of 0.9999 compared to pseudo-first-order with R2 value of 0.9335. This suggests chemisorption as the rate limiting factor.
