Abstract

The study area is situated at north part of Ranau which is about 115 km from North Fast of Kota Kinabalu town. This area is bounded by the latitude 05 57' N to 06 00' N and longitude from 116" 40' 1: to 116` 46' F. The objectives of this study is to study the general geology and engineering properties of laterite soils at North Ranau. There are various types of rock formation that can be found in study area such as ultrabasic rock, Trusmadi Formation, Crocker Formation, Gravel Pinousuk and Quaternary Alluvium. Petrography study show that the parent rocks of ultrabasic rocks are peridotite, while the sandstone of Trusmadi Formation is classified as greiwac. Parameters such as pH. moisture content, organic content (BOT %), particle size analysis has been used to determine the physical chemical characteritics of the laterite soils. Engineering properties soils analysis consist of Atterberg Limits, specific gravity, compaction test, compression test and permeability test. From the pH analysis the values for the three types of soils are acidic soils which is ranges between 5.7 to 6.6. The texture sample R1 is classified as sandy and silty clay, which has 37.1°o of moisture content. Sample R2 classified as silty clay with sand, which has 52.8°0 of moisture content. While sample R3 is classified as clay and has the highest of moisture content (59.9%). The range of organic matter for the three samples is between 9.3% to 10.2%. These three samples indicates a high plasticity and liquid limit ranges from 51.9°'o to 68.7°%. The study of specific gravity test shown three samples consist of a lot of mineral gibhsite with a specific gravity value between 2.61 to 2.79. Sample R1 is the highest of dry density (1.41 Mg/m ), followed by R3 (1.28 Mg/m`) and R2 (1.24 Mg/m`). The initial values of shear strength for sample R 1, R2 and R3 are 4.2 kN/m2,2.5 kN/m' and 3.9 kN, 'm`. The values of permeability for sample R 1, R2 and R3 are 2.6205 X 10' m/s, 1.1365 X 10' m/s and 1.0045 X 10"" m/s.
