Abstract

Psychological changes of the patients may occur in preoperative and postoperative period due to anxiety for operation. For assessment of the psychological changes, patients with ASA Class 1, 2, 3 of both sexes aged between 20 to 65 were recorded 69 male patients and 53 female, total 122 cases, major operation 102 and minor operation 20 cases were recorded. In this study preoperative counselling, assessment done and Speil Berger statetrait anxiety questionnaire are distributed. In the postoperative second day, these papers are collected. There are ten questionnaire for the state anxiety and then ten questionnaire for the trait anxiety. The total maximum scoring is forty (40) in traits and forty (40) in stateanxiety. Scoring 23 and above are trait and state anxiety accordingly. Out of 69 male patients 52 (75.4%) had high trait anxiety. Out of 53 female patients 40 (75.5%) had high trait anxiety. In state anxiety 26 male (37.7%), female 26 (49.1%) had high state anxiety. Among types of operations, in major cases, trait and state anxiety is associated and related. If trait anxiety is high, state anxiety will be high. Trait and state anxiety is not associated or not related in minor cases.
