Abstract

This study was conducted to study the effects of three different weed species namely Echinochloa crus-gal/i, Echinochloa colona, Leptochloa chinensis compete on the growth and yield of paddy varieties TR8. These weeds have begun to compete with the 15-18 days old rice plants after sowing. The study was conducted at the nets house in the Faculty of Sustainable Agriculture, Universiti Malaysia Sabah. Each treatment of weeds species include control treatment had three replicates. Type of experimental design used was Completely Randomised Design and data were analyzed by using two-way ANOVA. Two factors which are weeds and density have been chosen to study the effect of weed competition on the growth and yield of rice varieties TR8. The parameters were divided into two components which were growth and yield component. Rice growth parameters measured were plant height, number of leaves, the length of each stem and number of tillers. While the rice yield components were percentage of number of tillers, number of panicles per hill, number of grains per panicle, the number of empty grain on each panicle, and weight of 1000 grains. The calculation result of paddy is ton/ha for each treatment was used based on the calculation of extrapolated yield results. Treatment control showed the highest yield component of paddy which mean tan/ha about 2.67, followed by treatment weed Echinochloa crus-galli about 2.01, Echinochloa colona about 1.51, and Leptochloa chinensis about 0.77. Percentage of yield loss was also taken into account whereas the percentage of difference in paddy yield for each treatment compared to control was also done. Interaction effect between weed density were also available in every treatment weeds that compete with crops except for paddy variety TR8 control treatment. Effects of interaction was more focused on the yield production of paddy varieties TR8 and less applicable to the agronomic components of the vegetative growth of paddy. Toe study revealed that the three different species of weeds and different effects on the growth and yield of paddy. From the results obtained, it showed t),at weed species Leptochloa chinensis had the greatest effects on growth and yield of paddy TR8 variety with percentage of losses which was 71 %, Echinochloa colona was 43%, and Echinochloa crus-gal/iwas 25%. Effects of density factor was not so much impact because of the weed itself has had a severe impact on the growth and yield of rice. Hence, the best and effective way in controlling these weeds is through eliminating them at the early growing stage of paddy growth in order to minimize the paddy yield reduction.
