Abstract

Symplocos buxifolioides is a tree, endemic to Sabah. It is only known from a very small population on upper montane of Mount Kinabalu with estimated area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) at only 16 km2. The most plausible threats that could affect the population of this species are climate change and landslide. If these were to occur, they could drive the species towards Critically Endangered or Extinct in the near future. Hence, the species is assessed as Vulnerable. Symplocos buxifolioides is endemic to Sabah, Malaysia. It is only known from upper montane areas of Mount Kinabalu.

Item Type: Article
Additional Information: Symplocos buxifolioides is a tree up to 10 m tall and 10 cm in diameter. It is only known from uppermontane forest on Mount Kinabalu at 2,400–3,660 m asl (Pearce 2003). Symplocos buxifolioides is protected in situ in Kinabalu Park. There is no known ex situ collection for this species.
