Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the consumption of canned salmon among consumers of Kota Kinabalu. The main tool used for this study is the questionnaire form which is made up of four parts: (1) Demography of the respondents; (2) Consumption of canned salmon; (3) Factors influencing the consumption of canned salmon (15-item likert scale); (4) Knowledge about salmon (11-item likert scale). 460 respondents have took part in this study and was chosen on a random basis. The respondents are categorized into two categories which are respondents who consume canned salmon(29.9%) and those who do not consume (70.1%) canned salmon. The comparison of canned salmon consumption between the males and females are done using the Independent T-test. Through the Independent T-test it was found that the factors contributing to the consumption of canned salmon is different between the genders (p<0.05) except for the taste of salmon, affordable price of salmon and recommendation of others (p>O.05). The difference in the knowledge of salmon between different education level are analyzed using the One-way ANOVA. Through the One-Way ANOVA test, it was found that the knowledge about salmon is different between different education levels(p<O.05). Independent T-test is used to compare the consumption of canned salmon between the males and females. Using the Independent T-test it was found that the consumption of canned salmon between males and females are the same (p>0.05). As a conclusion, it can be said that the consumption of canned salmon among the consumers of Kota Kinabalu is very poor. In order to overcome this situation, more promotions on canned salmon as well as free sample tasting should be given to promote the purchase and consumption of canned salmon. The knowledge about the benefits of salmon is also lacking among the consumers of Kota Kinabalu. More campaigns on benefits of salmon should be carried out so that the consumers are well equipped with the knowledge on salmon.
