Abstract

This thesis has attained it objective specifically synthesized liquid crystal compound that exhibit mesogenic properties and banana shaped structured. Starting material for this project was ethyl 4-aminobenzoate. The initial step was diazonium salt coupling reaction with 4-flourophenol to obtain 4-(4-ethyl-diazobenzoate) fluorophenol, which melting point at the range 170 - 172° C. The next reaction was Wil1iamson eter reaction with l-bromohexadecane to obtain [4-( 4-ethyl-diazobenzoate) fluorophenoloxy] hexadecane that melting point at the range 81 - 84° C. Ester was converted to acid form by hydrolyzed with strong alkali to obtain [4-(4-ethyldiazobenzoate) fluorophenylazo] benzoic acid that melting point comes at the range 196 - 200°C. Product formed was undergoes esterification reaction with catechol, DMAP and DCC to obtain 1,2,-phenylene bis [4-( 4-ethyl-diazobenzoate) tluorophenylazo] benzoate. This compound has melting point at the range 104 - 108°C. Functional group in each product formed will compared with the functional group of the product formed in the next reaction with FT -lR. It has been discovered that all product formed have functional groups such as azo group, C-H bending, C=O stretcing, phenol group and C-O-C bonding.
