Abstract

A study about effects of logging on anuran communities has been conducted at dipterocarp lowland forest in Danum Valley. This study was conducted in October and November 2007. Four locations were chosen during the sampling, where two locations represent the primary forest and the other two locations represent the secondary forest. The selected locations of secondary forest were areas that have been logged in 1989. Anuran were sampled using two methods, pitfall traps and a manual search during the night where each anuran captured by hand. Three transects of pitfall trap were set up in each forest type. Sampling period was seven days in each forest type that took 14 days of total days. Overall, there were 100 individuals of anuran successfully caught during this study where it represents 36 species from 16 genera and five families of anuran. There were more species of anuran recorded in secondary forest (28 species) compared to primary forest (15 species). The study showed that logging did not affect negatively to anurans communities in Danum Valley. Although logged forest especially forest that logged since 19 years ago cannot replace primary forest, logged forest still has a vital role to play in terms of conservation of the anuran fauna.
