Abstract

A ten day study of the behavior of the proboscis monkey, Nasalis larvatus was carried out in September and December 2007 at Garama, Klias Peninsula. This study was aimed to study the daily behavioral activity patterns of N. larvatus in tandem with the population density estimates and mapping the distribution patterns of the monkey. Employing boat survey method, the population of N. larvatus along Garama River was surveyed and the scan sampling method was used to collect the behavioral data of N. larvatus during the study. Population density of N. larvatus in Garama is estimated to be 1.85 groups/km² or 14.07 individuals/km².Groups of N. larvatus were frequently encountered in the Padas Damit Forest Reserve area but also encountered outside of this reserve, especially in the upper parts of Garama River. Riverine forest was the most preferred habitat by N. larvatus. Major behavioral activities identified were resting (61.39%), feeding (19.70%), moving (8.70%), and grooming (6.76%). N. larvatus did show a marked variation in all their major behavioral activities (P≥0.05) with the time of day. This study also show that the monkey's behavior to roost on trees by the riverbanks during late evening until early morning and their major behavioral activities are comparable with their conspecific elsewhere in Sabah and Borneo. Generally, Garama is an important place for the conservation of N. larvatus in Klias Peninsula.
