Abstract

The study described herein is an investigation of the treatability of a commonly used azo dye in the textile dyeing and finishing operations, Methyl Orange (MO), by TiO₂/H₂O₂/UV system. It focused on the photocatalytic degradation process, where the effects of various H₂O₂ concentrations (i.e. 5 x l0��, l x 1O��, 5 x 10��, 1 x 10�³,5 x 10�³ mol/L and at the absence of H₂O₂ and solution pH (at pH 2, 5.3, 9 and 11) were examined using a cylindrical photoreactor of 400-mL capacity and UV-A (320-400 nm) lamp. The degradation process was monitored by measuring the absorbance value at 465nm. The addition of H₂O₂ in the TiO₂/UV system (as TiO₂/H₂O₂/UV system) has apparently improving the degradation rate of MO solution, however it was detriment by the addition of excess H₂O₂ more than 1 x 10�³ mol/L. Kinetic analysis of MO photodegradation is pseudo-first-order reaction according to Langmuir-Hinshelwood model, with rate constant of decoluorisation, kAbs in the range of 0.0017 and 0.0165 min�¹.
