Abstract
Crude water extract from Calvatia sp. fruitbodies was tested against bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli) and fungi (Candida albicans). Both of the bacteria (S. aureus and E. coli) showed concentration dependent susceptibility towards the extract where 35.3% and 54.9%, reduction in the cell numbers were observed respectively when treated with 400 mg/ml of Calvatia sp. extract concentration. The growth of C. albicans was not affected proportionally with the extract concentration where highest reduction in the cell numbers was observed at 200 mg/ml extract concentration (only . 20.6% of reduction was observed). Stability testing performed to; the extract shown that the antimicrobial potential of Calvalia sp. extract was stable over different storage temperature but the potential was significantly decrease over prolonged storage period. Calvalia sp. extract effectively reduce the percentage germination of C. albicans. where 68.22% of reduction in the germination was observed when treated with 80 mg/ml of extract. As for the germ tube length Calvalia sp. extract was not effective in controlling the elongation of germ tube. Based on the findings in this project, it can be concluded that this mushroom has antimicrobial potential against certain microorganism
