Abstract
Selected sample strain of Purple Non-sulfur Bacteria (PNSB) from the culture collection of Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI) was mass cultured under anaerobic light conditions. The dry cell weight (mgl¹) and total carotenoids (mgg¹ dry cell weight) were analyzed to determine the bacterial cell mass. The highest dry cell weight was 0.00619 mgl¹ the second day of culture and the highest for total carotenoids were 39.44 mgg¹ dry cell weight on the third day of culture. Artemia were enriched by the cultured PNSB sufficiently and water sample with Artemia were taken before fed with PNSB and after fed with PNSB at 2, 4 and 6 hours after fed to observe the Optical density (OD) and count the colony forming units per ml (cfu/ml) to analyzed the bio-encapsulation of PNSB by Artemia. For the OD, the highest point was after fed which is 2.165 and continue to decrease until the 6 hours after fed. As for the cfu/ml, the number of bacteria on agar plate increased with hours and the highest number was at 6 hours after fed which is 90 cfu/ml. This means that the Artemia had eaten the PNSB.
