Abstract

A mark and recapture study was conducted in Kalamounian Damit Island, Sabah to estimate the population size of sea krait, Laticauda colubrina. The study was conducted on October and December 2009 and February 2010. The present population size was estimated at 64 Individuals. Sea kraits showed habitat preference on specific geographical structures on the island such as large beach rocks, boulders and shaded areas. Most of the recaptured sea kraits were found on areas where sea kraits are most concentrated. There were trends in the parameters analyses where sea kraits were mostly found in low carbon dioxide concentration and temperature and high in relative humidity. The environment temperature prefer by sea kraits which was lower than their average body temperature with high relative humidity to prevent dehydration. For morphometric analyses, the females were significantly longer and bigger in size as compared to males. However, the tail length relatively to snout-vent length of both sexes showed that the male sea kraits showed have longer tails than the female sea kraits.
