Abstract

Clay was very useful in human life. This dissertation is conducted to determine the physical, thermal and chemical properties of clay. Two samples was taken from Sayong, Perak and Pontian, Johor. These samples then were tested for its pH, moisture and organic content and specific gravity. For thermal analysis, samples are run by using DSC and TGA. FTIR is used to determine its organic and inorganic group in the clay in chemical analysis. Acidity of Ll (6.07) and L2 (5.26) are given by oxidation process to produce H2SO., precipitation of rain and organic matter. Their moisture content; Ll (29.1?01o) and L2 (32.36%) show amount of water can be hold in structure. Percent of organic content is quite higher where LI is 8.32% and L2 is 10.05%. specific gravity for Ll is 2.57 and L2 is 2.32. TGA analysis show the loss of absorber at 80-100°C, adsorbed at (lOO-200°C), crystalline water (>700 °C) and also other organic and minerals. DSC show the exothennic peak due to the break. down of structural water at range 243-285 °C. FTIR studies show the presence of quartz, alumina, Fe, calcite, hematite and gypsum.
