Abstract

Tarap (Artocarpus odoratissimus) is an underutilized tropical fruit species which contains high amount of carbohydrate and total phenolic content. An experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of supplementation Tarap meal and enzyme mixed Tarap on the growth performance of broiler chicken. Twenty-two raw fruits were purchased and processed into Tarap meal by utilizing the whole fruit. Four experimental diets were formulated: a control diet containing 100% commercial starter feed and three treatment diets (T1, T2 and T3) in which Tarap meal was included at 5% for T1, 10% for T2, 10% mixed with enzymes to replace the starter feed. Feeding trail was conducted for 35 days, in which total of forty-four 10 day-old broiler chicken were assigned randomly to four diets. Feed intake, body weight gain, growth rate and feed conversion ratio of birds were determined for each diet. Proximate analysis of Tarap meal and commercial starter feed was carried out. Total phenolics content of Tarap meal was examined. Results showed that the moisture, ash, crude protein, crude fibre, ether extract and nitrogen free extract for Tarap meal were 14.80%, 2.47%, 4.97%, 5.24%, 14.32% and 58.20%. For commercial starter feed were 8.87%, 14.65%, 22.15%, 4.67%, 3.27% and 46.39%. Total phenolics content for Tarap meal is 7.94 mg GAE/g. The highest growth performance was the birds fed with control diet.
