Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the phosphorus concentrations in the Harmful Alga Bloom (HAB) affected areas in Kota Kinabalu (KK) coastal water. In this study, seawater samples were taken from 14 different stations along the KK in order to predict the status of Phosphorus concentrations in HAB affected areas. The result indicated that concentrations of total phosphorus (TP) were higher (0.020mg/L to 0.080mg/L) in all stations compare to the concentration of Soluble Reactive Phosphorus (SRP), in the range of 0.020mg/L to 0.040mg/L. The concentrations of SRP were higher (0.1384mg/L) in surface layer compared to the concentrations observed in bottom (0.0464mg/L). The highest concentration of phosphorus in the stations was originated from land-based developed activities in coastal area of Kota Kinabalu. The result also indicated that the concentration of SRP in the seawater was the highest of 0.1384mg/L at station 2 and concentration of TP was the highest of 1.0142mg/L at station 13, both of these stations near to main land. The surface runoff from nearby areas into Sepanggar and Tanjung Aru contributed to availability of phosphorus concentration in those stations. TP was observed the highest of 1.0142mg/L than the concentrations of SRP (0.1384mg/L) in high and low precipitation period. Concentrations of SRP during high and low precipitation period had the highest of 0.1384mg/L in surface compared to that was obtained in bottom layer (0.0464mg/L). TP concentration was the higher (1.0142mg/L) in surface compared to the concentration obtained in bottom layer in low precipitation period, same thing happen in high precipitation period where the concentration was the higher (0.1813mg/L) in surface layer as compared to concentration from bottom (0.1537mg/L). However statistical analysis showed that there was no significance difference in the concentration of SRP and TP between the precipitation periods (p < 0.05).
