Abstract

The purpose of this research project is to study free convection problem about a sphere immersed in a porous medium. The surface of the sphere oscillates harmonically about a mean temperature of the surrounding. The method of matched asymptotic expansions used has divided the solution domain into an inner region and an outer region. The analytical technique was performed in the inner region and the numerical technique finite difference method was employed in the outer region. In the inner region, the expansion terms of second order were separated into steady term and unsteady term, and this approach is able to simplify the analytical solution process. It was found that, a steady 'temperature and steady stream function that exist at the outer edge of the inner region where not satisfy the boundary conditions. In the both regions, the temperature and stream function are decrease when oscillating frequency is increases. Temperature and stream function in the inner region are more dominant to the region that is closed to the sphere for fast oscillation; and these effects to the value of temperature and stream function in the outer region as well.
