Abstract

Rattan are important non-wood resources after timber. It has long been used by rural folks in the making of baskets, cords, furniture and in many other uses. Many of these rattan species are being collected from the wild and this has resulted in over-exploitation of the resources. Work on taxonomy of rattans in this country has been documented and thus providing the information to conduct ecological and silviculture research. It is therefore appropriate that information on ecology of the species is collated in this book entitled Silviculture and Ecology of Rattan which can be used by rattan growers and forest managers as well as academicians. This book provides information of the ecology and silviculture of rattan in the region with emphasis on species in Peninsular Malaysia.
