Abstract

The research was conducted in a selected dairy cattle farm in Keningau, Sabah. The first objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of lactation number on the production and reproduction performances of the Sahiwal x Friesian crossbred dairy cows. 69 Sahiwal x Friesian crossed dairy cows were used, which calved for the first time in the calendar year 2017. Lactation number was classified as: one (1) for first lactation, two (2) for second lactation and three (3) for third lactation. Production performance parameters assessed included total lactation yield (TLY), 305-day lactation yield (305d- LY), lactation duration (LL) and average daily milk yield (ADY). The parameters evaluated for reproductive performance were calving interval (CI) and open stall days (DO). It was indicated that lactation number had significant effects on some of the production performance traits (305d-LY, LL and ADY) but insignificant effects on the reproduction performance traits (CI and DO). For the parities studied, cows in first lactation showed a significantly lower ADY (9.60 ± 0.63 litres/day) compared to the cows in the second and third lactations. Cows in the first lactation showed a significantly longer LL (289.01 ± 8.71 days) than the cows in the second and third lactations. It was found that 305d-LY increased with the advance of lactation number. Cows in second and third lactation showed a significantly higher 305d-LY than the cows in first lactation. The second aim of the study was to determine the impacts of first calving age (AFC) on production and reproductive capacities of the primiparous crossbred Sahiwal Friesian milking cows. A total of 141 primiparous Sahiwal x Friesian cross cows that calved for the first time in 2017 were used. The cows were divided into seven groups according to AFC: Group 1 (≤ 22 months old), Group 2 (22.1-24 months old), Group 3 (24.1-26 months old), Group 4 (26.1-28 months old), Group 5 (28.1-30 months old), Group 6 (30.1-32 months old) and Group 7 (> 32 months old). The production and reproduction performance parameters evaluated are the same as study conducted related to the first objective. AFC had a significant effect on the LL but non-significant effects on the other factors studied. The cows that firstly calved at 22.1-24 months of age (345.56 ± 26.92 days) and 24.1-26 months of age (339.25 ± 18.89 days) indicated significantly the longest LL compared to the other AFC groups.
