Abstract

This study focuses on the synthesis, characterization and photocatalytic activity of TiOrSi02 in the presence of Reactive Chlorine Species (RCS). In this system, both Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) (i.e. ·OH and ·0>) and RCS such as ·Cl, ·CIO and ·ClE work together in degradation of Methylene Blue (MB) dye. The sol gel method was employed to synthesize the TiOrSi02 composite. Instrumentations such as Xray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance (UV-Vis DRS) and Photoluminescence spectrophotometer (PL) were employed to study the characterization of the prepared photocatalyst. In addition, both parametric and kinetic studies were conducted to study the photodegradation of MB by the Ti0-SiO> in the presence of RCS. Parameters such as the influence of initial pH of solution, initial concentration of MB and dosage of photocatalyst on photo degradation of MB were investigated and discussed. Experimental results confirmed that the UV-treated TiOrSi02 achieved the highest removal efficiency, 60% of removal efficiency of MB (6 ppm) in the presence of RCS under solar irradiation, in comparison to Ti0,-Si0> (38% of removal efficiency) and the commercial Degussa P-25 (27% of removal efficiency). The UV-treated Ti0-SiO> exhibited highest removal efficiency, 93% of removal efficiency, at acidic condition compared to neutral which exhibited 61 % of removal efficiency and alkaline conditions with 69% of removal efficiency. It was found that in this photocatalytic system, the RCS contributed the most in the degradation of MB under solar irradiation. The results showed that the UV-treated TiOrSi02 had faster photocatalytic reaction due to its enhanced specific surface area, crystallinity, surface hydroxyl and enhanced efficient usage of photogenerated holes and electrons. The visible light induced photodegradation of MB by the prepared Ti0-SiO> in the presence of RCS were analyzed based on the first order kinetic rate model and it was found that the attained experimental data obeyed the first order kinetic model.
