Abstract
The hexane, ethyl acetate, acetone, ethanol, methanol and water extracts of Cucurbita moschata, Lasia spinosa and Limnocharis flava were tested on their total antioxidant activity by using 2,2-0iphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging, ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP), β-carotene bleaching methods and total phenolic contents by using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent (FCR) assay. In general, water extraction of all the investigated plants indicated the most satisfied results whereas hexane extracts showed the lowest antioxidant activitiy among the antioxidant capacity assay. Water extracts of Cucurbita moschata possessed the strongest DPPH radical scavenging activity with 4.34 mg/ml50 of EC50 whereas EC50 values of hexane and ethyl acetate extracts of all the investigated plants did not reach EC50 at test concentration were reported greater than 40 mg/ml. Similarly, water extract of Cucurbita moschata exhibited highest reducing capacity and total phenolic contents which were 140.77µmol TE/g of db and 29.77mg of GAE/g of db. The weakest reducing capacity and total phenolic contents found in the hexane extracts of all the investigated plants. In β-carotene bleaching methods, IC50 of acetone extracts of Cucurbita moschata was the lowest which was 1.86 mg/ml. For Lasia spinosa and Limnocharis flava, ethyl acetate extracts showed the lowest IC50 among the solvent extracts. Cucurbita moschata extracts exhibited the strongest antioxidant capacity and total phenolic contents in the entire assay followed by Limnocharis flava and Lasia spinosa extracts. However, all extracts found to be weaker radical scavenger, reducing capacity and inhibit lipid oxidation as compared to the standard, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). Total phenolic contents of all the investigated plants were strongly correlated with antioxidant activities except for Cucurbita moschata extracts which analyzed in β-carotene bleaching method.
