Abstract
The possibilities and difficulties of teaching basic English in underfunded rural Indonesian schools were investigated in this qualitative research. In a massively interconnected world, especially in rural areas, having proficiency in English is important for Indonesian students as it provides opportunities to education, career advancement, cultural exchange, and personal development. The study aims to explore effective teaching methods and the idea of scaffolding to support English language acquisition in these contexts. The study looked into the viewpoints, experiences, and practices of English teachers and students using semi-structured interviews, document analysis, and classroom observations. The theme analysis's findings showed that teachers deal with various issues, such as a lack of resources, big class numbers, lack of teacher training, and linguistic diversity among students. Despite these obstacles, the study identified creative scaffolding methods where teachers offered students structured support that gradually diminishes as proficiency increases. The study's conclusions have broad ramifications for decision-makers in policymaking, educators, and other rural education stakeholders in Indonesia. Lastly, the study adds to the continuing conversation on the revolutionary potential of language acquisition in impoverished environments and fair access to top-notch education.
