Abstract

This qualitative study aims to explore students' perceptions towards non-fiction writing prompts and identify their argumentative writing performance in a mixed-proficiency rural classroom. The study involved a total of 20 participants, comprising 10 from the low proficiency group, 6 from the intermediate group, and 4 from the high proficiency group. Focus group discussions were conducted to examine students' perceptions, and their writing samples were analysed using the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) rubrics. Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis and Bowen’s document analysis were employed to analyse the data. The findings suggest that students at different proficiency levels have varied experiences and challenges with non-fiction writing prompts, ranging from vocabulary and expression difficulties to preference for structured tasks and confidence in advanced writing. The analysis of writing samples further revealed the need for targeted support in areas such as vocabulary development, language accuracy, and maintaining high standards in the genre. By considering the diverse perspectives and needs of students at different proficiency levels, teachers can tailor their non-fiction writing instruction to better address the unique challenges faced by learners in mixed-proficiency rural classrooms. These insights can inform pedagogical approaches to support students' non-fiction writing development in mixed-proficiency rural classrooms.
