Abstract
A series of feeding experiments had been carried out to detennine that which sensory organs are used by Patin (Pangasius hypophthalmus) and seabass (Lates calcarifer) larvae to detect feed. Patin larvae detect feed by taste buds and olfactory organ while the eyes and free neuromasts just play a complementary role. Besides, Patin larvae practiced on searching behaviour when feeding. Therefore, either live feed or artificial powder feed (APF) (higher recommendation), both are suitable for daytime and night time feeding. The results show that seabass larvae use eye to detect feed while taste buds, olfactory organs and free neuromasts just playa complementary role. Seabass larvae practiced on 'aim-striking' behaviour when feeding. Therefore, live feed is suggested for seabass larvae during daytime feeding. Moreover, seabass larvae can detect feed by free neuromasts and taste buds under dark condition. Therefore, night time feeding is also suggested.
