Abstract

A study involving vermicomposting of durian husk (DH), sugarcane waste (SW) and spent mushroom substrate (SMS) was conducted at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). This study involved the use of Perinyx excavatus (Blue Worm) to vermicompost the various organic wastes (i.e. DH, SW, SMS) treated with or without cow dung (CD). The chemical characteristics (i.e. pH, total nitrogen (TN), organic carbon (OC), potassium (1<), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg» and the composting effiCiency were evaluated. This was a factorial experiment using completely randomised design (CRD). There were six treatment combinations with three replicates each. The six treatments-were three types of organic wastes: DH, SW and SMS (all were dried-shredded); and two types of amendments: with or without CD. The ratios that were used was 7:3:1 (DH or SW or SMS: CD: earthworm) for treatments with CD and 10:1 (DH or SW or SMS: earthworm) for treatments without CD. All experimental units were pre-com posted for 14 days before the earthworms were introduced. All data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test was used for means separation. In comparison to the raw materials, after vermicomposting; pH, TN, K and Ca of the compost increased by 34.0% to 52.4%, 100% to 350%, 291.8% to 491.3%, 26.6% to 80.9% respectively while Mg and OC decreased by 10.1% to 25.9% and 11.0% to 25.2 % respectively. The results of analysis showed the following for DH vermicomposts: pH = 7.1, TN =0.09%, OC = 40.99 %, K = 67.63mg kg¯¹, Ca =108.2mg kg¯¹, Mg =21.84mg kg-1 and composting effiCiency = 52.51%. The SW pH, TN, OC, K, Ca and Mg vermicomposts resulted in values of 6.4, 0.04%, 40.12%, 20.1mg kg¯¹, 140.13mg kg¯¹, and 8.0mg kg¯¹ respectively. The composting efficiency for SW was 26.08%. In the case of SMS vermicomposts pH, TN, OC, K, Ca and Mg was 8.2, 0.06%, 42.78%, 6.1mg kg¯¹, 496.07mg kg¯¹, and 22.0mg kg¯¹ respectively. The composting efficiency for SMS was 87.49 %. The study indicated that DH amended with CD was the most suitable organic waste that can be used for vermicomposting. The abundance of various organic wastes in the country provides an opportunity for both researchers and farmers to conduct further vermicomposting studies and field trials in the future.
