Abstract
A study on sulphate discharge along Menggatal Stream has been carried out in January and February 2006. The objective of this study was to understand the relationship between stream discharge and sulphate concentration and to determine the potential source of sulphate in Menggatal Stream. Stream discharge was found controlling the sulphate concentration along the stream due to dilution process. Daily sulphate load during the study period was estimated in the range of 29.42 - 282.20 kg. Background concentrations of sulphate for station 1, 2, 3 and 4 were 14.9 mg/l, 10 mg/1, 2.5 mg/l and 18 mg/1, respectively; whereas, differences between average sulphate concentration and background concentration were 10.85 mg/l, 20.25 mg/l, 3.50 mg/1 and 37.75 mg/l respectively. Based on the differences between sulphate concentration and background concentration, the catchment area for station 4 which is less developed area is a possible sulphate source in Menggatal Stream
