Abstract

In this study, two species of Hornstedtia which are Hornstedtia tomentosa and H. scyphifera were investigated to determine their antioxidant activity, total phenolic and flavonoid content. Besides that, relationship between the antioxidant activities and the total phenolic and flavonoid content of these two Hornstedtia species were also determined. The plants were separated and tested into different parts: leaf, stem and rhizome. The plants were screened for antioxidant activity using 2, 2'-diphenyl-l-picrylbydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity assay. To determine phenolic and flavonoid content of these ginger species, folin-ciocalteau and colometric aluminium chloride were used respectively. The results showed the highest total phenolic and flavonoid content and antioxidant activity in H. tomentosa rhizome (1.855 mg GAE/g, 1.826 mg CE/g and 85.77%, respectively). The lowest total phenolic content was revealed in H. scyphifera rhizome (0.340 mg GAE/g). The lowest flavonoid content and antioxidant activity was showed in H. scyphifera stem (0.159 mg CE/g and 42.19%, respectively). These study showed that there is strong correlation between phenolic and flavonoid content in Hornstedtia species (r = 0.984, P < 0.05) whereas antioxidant activity were not highly correlated with phenolic and flavonoid content (r = 0.176, p>0.05 and r = 0.264, p > 0.05, respectively). These study showed that H. tomentosa and H. scyphifera exhibited a potential as natural antioxidant.
