Abstract
The upshots of the East Asian financial predicament have been the harshest on Indonesia, a nation long observed as one of the developing globe's greatest success chronicles. Even though caused by outside factors, the origins of the economic fall down can be tracked down to a sequence of policy blunders and to the disposition of economy policy-making beneath Suharto. Subsequent to the predicament, Indonesia once more boarded on major transformations, this time of its institutions, together with constitutional and electoral reforms, the founding of an independent central bank and independent judiciary, decentralization and liberalization of the press and civil society. The primary concern of this study is basically whether Indonesia is appropriately considered as a poorly performing state or in other words a weak state. The study begins with defining and clarifying the weak state concept. Furthermore, an overview of Indonesia as an entity and deciding whether it is a weak state is done respectively. This overview is based on Indonesia's past record of economic and political development and then focus on the contemporary state of affairs and issues. In addition, this study will also assess Indonesia's developmental route giving particular importance to the economic and political challenge the state is struggling with and moreover to analyze how far does those challenges reflect Indonesia as not a weak state. This study concludes that Indonesia is not a weak state.
