Abstract

This research was conducted to study the growth of juvenile hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys Imbricata) in Universiti Malaysia Sabah. Five hatchlings hawksbill turtles were taken from Pulau langkayan, Sandakan in Sabah and raised In the quarantine area of Borneo Marine Research Institute, UMS. The growth trends of hawksbill turtles measured in term of straight carapace length, (50 in millmetres) and body weight (Bwt in grams) varied individually and the variation in growth between Individuals was higher compare to hawksbill turtles at hatchling and early juvenile stage. The growth had also deaeased and slowed down compare to the hawksbill turtles at hatchling and earlier juvenile stage. At 896 days old, hawksbill turtles had mean SCL sizes of 381 mm and Mean Bwt of 5935.2 g. Mean SCL measured from eight days to 896 days old was 199.844 mm. Mean Bwt when measured from eight days to 896 days old was 1949.3 g. There were also changes In the external morphology. Hatchling carapace was brown and changed to dark brown. At early juvenile stage, the dome and oval shaped hawksbill turtle carapace was imbricated. The juvenile hawksbill turtle carapace changed from light brown to dark brown. Plastron of the hatchling was black and turned to a more whitish colour. The yellowish plastron of juvenile hawksbill turtles turned to pale yellow. After 716 days old, there were less changes in the carapace and plastron colouration as their growth had slowed down. Morphometric analysis was carried out to enable the prediction of size of certain parameters from any attributes that are available.
