Abstract

This study was aimed to find relation between seasonal monsoon and seaweed production in Semporna, Sabah. Besides that, it was done also to find if there is any effect of rainfall, temperature, wind speed and ENSO events on seaweed production. Secondary data were obtained from Meteorological Department and Department Fisheries of Sabah. From 2008 to 2010, seaweed production is highest during southwest monsoon but the significance values for the southeast, northwest and inter-seasonal monsoon were all greater than 0.05, showing no correlation between these three variables with seaweed production. Rainfall and wind speed also showed no correlation with seaweed production. Temperature showed strong positive correlation (r=0.677) with a significant value (p) of 0.031 to seaweed production and Southern Oscillation Index showed medium positive correlation value, r, was 0.494 indicating a medium correlation to seaweed production.
