Abstract

Most of the consumption energy resources that exist nowadays are non-renewable energy resources and not eco-friendly which cause lots of environment problem. It is important to invent a new type of alternative energy resource to replace the nonrenewable energy resources. The main objective of this study is to identify the potential of chlorophyll as battery cell. Chlorophyll is extracted from fresh spinach leaves through two extraction method. Carbon rod and strip of zinc is used as the positive and negative terminal of chlorophyll battery cell respectively. I-V characteristic of 1 chlorophyll battery cell connected to 1 kΩ resistor is tested. Besides that, I-V characteristic of three chlorophyll battery cell which connected to a LED in series is tested, too. Chlorophyll sample A of both extraction methods are tested for three consecutive days while sample B and sample C of both extraction methods are tested on different concentration. All of the chlorophyll samples are able to light up the LED. Chlorophyll battery cell contains non-toxic and the manufacturing cost is low. This shows that chlorophyll battery cell has a highly potential to develop as new type of energy resource.
