Abstract

This study examined the preferred temperature versus the perceived neutral temperature in a tropical humid climate. The main aim was to investigate the discrepancy and to quantify the difference between the preferred versus the neutral temperature using ASHRAE scale. A field study was carried out at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah by means of both objective and subjective approaches. The results revealed that the subjects preferred cooler temperature within the range under investigation. The results showed that the desired thermal sensation was lower than the neutral sensation by about one unit. The preferred temperature was not recommended in this study. This is because it has negative implication on energy consumption. This also negatively affects the environment. An alternative friendly suggested solution is the usage of fans to supplement the air conditioning.
