Abstract

A research study was carried out in order to investigate consumption pattern of convenience foods among university students (n=300). Questionnaire pertaining to demography of the subjects was attached to the FFQ. Simple random sampling was adopted in this research study. Subjects in this research study were recruited in the library. All the respondents involved in this research study were in-campus residents. Three statistical methods namely Mann-Whitney test, Kruskal-Wallis test and correlation were used. The Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were chosen because the data for consumption of convenience food was not normally distributed (Kolmogorov-Smimov test, p < 0.001). The intake of convenience food by female respondents was not significantly different from male respondents (p > 0.05). The intake of convenience food by respondents who were ill was not significantly different from those healthy respondents during the survey period (p > 0.05). Serving sizes were not significantly different from total monthly expenses spent on convenience foods (p > 0.05). More than half of the respondents (66%) had normal body weight. There were 27.7% underweight respondents and this would probably due to under-eating. In conclusion, consumption of convenience foods among female respondents was not significantly different from male respondents.
